26 october 2009 tragedy part 1 :(

After 6 years of breeding and owning gliders, I guess it’s finally my turn to go through this. Last night, to my horror I found 2 of my very precious gliders with severe wounds. I’d been out of town for the past 10 days so I wasn’t able to catch them when they first happened. Kair has wounds across most of the top of her head. They were all scabbed over, no infection, she looked good considering. KaiRina was a different story. From her wrist down the side of her patagium was all ripped open. Thank god I had an e collar on hand. I immediately got her in the e-collar, wound cleaned and hospital cage set up. They both went to the vet first opening this morning. Dr. Sue took them straight to surgery. She sedating KaiRina, cleaned the wound, and stitched her up. She removed a few scabs from Kair’s head to make sure there was no infection. We tried and tried to get a normal e collar on her but it just wasn’t working out, I was able to get a snap e collar from Chris(glidrz5) for her. Thank you Chris! This is just another lesson, I had e collars, lots of them, and all different sizes but I only had one snap e collar, I know now to keep more than one on hand. Kair is being a good girl and is sleeping in my bra, hasn’t touched her head yet but that doesn’t mean she won’t so she will be in the e collar later. KaiRina is in the e collar, resting, I’m sure she’s one sore girl. The vet let me watch the whole procedure and I have some good pics. Wish I could have gotten more but I really didn’t want to be a burden so I only took a few.

How this happened? I’m not positive but I’m guessing it was a fight over food. Kair and KaiRina have been housed with Cheiko and Neiko for a year or more now. Both of the boys are neutered and they have all always gotten along great except for an occasional spat over food. They would fuss but never anything serious. Both of the boys are unharmed.

So they are both on antibiotics and pain meds. KaiRina spent the night in a daytripper because I want to limit her movement. I have a small hospital cage I’m going to move her to tonight and Kair will get a 38 gal rept since she is free to move as much as she wants. KaiRina was able to eat on her own from a small bowl last night, thankfully.

below are some controversial issues :

Tofu & Soy Products: Tofu is recommended by Caroline MacPherson as a good source of protein. But some breeders are opposed to soy products being given to sugar gliders. Research on some other animals shows tofu can have a negative effect on the digestive system. As far as we know, a negative effect on sugar gliders has not yet been proven. Some breeders object to tofu because it is a protein source from beans, rather than meat or insect.

Grapes & Raisins: Suncoast Sugar Gliders believes that there may be a connection from grapes and raisins to kidney failure in sugar gliders (as well as other pets). Click here to read Suncoast's newsletter regarding the grape controversy.

Fruit Pits, Skins, and Seeds: There is some debate over whether or not it is safe to leave pits, seeds, and skin on/in fruits. I have read from several sources stating you should remove pits from any fruit that you give your gliders. I ran across this newsletter by Suncoast, which states that although pits, skins, and seeds are bad for gliders, they have come to realize that gliders are smart enough not to eat them and that it is ok to not remove them.

6 introductions to make when you get home :)

Your Scent, Your Voice, Your Hand, Your Fingers, Your Face, Your Breath

Your SCENT
Place your new Sugar Glider into a pouch that you slept with, and add the blanket that he lived with up until pick-up day. ***See Hint Below***

Your VOICE

Leave your new Glider in his cage for 3 days undisturbed other than feeding & talking to him. On day 4, you can hold him in his pouch. If he crabs, comfort him by pressing the pouch against your body. You can start out talking gently & quietly then work up to the voice that you would like to use regularly.

Your HAND
When you’re able to hold the pouch with only intermittent crabbing . You can introduce him to your hand. Hold the pouch in your lap and place your entire hand in the pouch. It is very important to Be Deliberate as slowly "sneaking in" can scare a joey into thinking that you are a predator. Keep your hand there as long as you like. He will curl up next to or in your hand & fall asleep. ***See Note Below***

Your FINGERS

Now is a good time to offer treats. Ideally, you should hold the treat for him while he’s eating it. This will create trust very quickly. A 1/2 grape is ideal because a joey can spend 5 minutes eating it while you hold it for him. Continue talking to your Glider.

Your FACE

Start to coax him to inch out of his pouch gradually. A treat works best. Gliders are very intelligent - you’ll notice that he’ll look at you, at your hair, everything around him, and he will look you right in the eyes. A Glider will remember your face. Gliders are very aware. Their ears are like little radars.

Your BREATH

Now that your Glider is used to you in every other way, try talking to him closer to your face, and exhale a lot when you do it. Once you can do this without your Glider crabbing at you, You have created a strong bond. If you keep it up, YOU will mean the world to your Glider. Enjoy your new friend!

***HINT: Before you bring your Glider home, add some small “blankets” &/or Pouch to your bed, so you have something safe to offer that your new Glider will associate you.

***NOTE: If at any point he exit’s the pouch, this means he needs to eliminate. Place him into a container that he can’t get out of until he’s finished - this will take several minutes. I use a small aquarium for this. Most Gliders freeze in one spot until finished. When she starts to move around again, he’s done and you can show him the pouch & he’ll climb right back in.
